Therapy Approaches

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a powerful, empirically-supported treatment for anxiety disorders that is short-term and action-oriented. It involves teaching patients to recognize their emotional state, learn coping skills to manage their symptoms, and form a new relationship with their anxiety. Exposure, or gradually confronting one’s fears, is thought to be the “active ingredient” of CBT and is a key feature of our treatment programs.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is the most effective behavioral intervention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It involves gradually exposing patients to situations that trigger obsessions while helping them resist the urge to engage in compulsions or rituals. Over time, it becomes easier to resist compulsions and eventually breaks the OCD cycle.

Habit Reversal Training (HRT)

HRT is an evidence-based form of behavioral therapy that is used to treat a number of different disorders that are similar to “habits”. These include tics, Tourette Syndrome, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as trichotillomania, skin-picking, and nail-biting. It involves awareness training—or noticing warning signs that a problematic behavior is about to occur—and developing competing responses—or replacement behaviors—that can interrupt the cycle of tics or BFRBs.

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)

BPT is a well-studied approach used to help caregivers of children with challenging behaviors, including oppositional and off-task behaviors. These difficulties often present alongside anxiety and sometimes present on their own. BPT provides parents with tools to manage these behaviors more calmly, systematically, and effectively, thereby allowing for a more positive relationship between the parent and the child.
